Mai's Guest Lodge - reviews by guests

Here's our first comment since Johan took over on 1 November 2017...

First class hospitality, wonderful rooms

We stayed at Mais recently and loved the experience. We received an extremely warm welcome, and were made to feel very at home. The rooms are quirky and original - each individually decorated - also extremely comfortable, with great bed and linen. It felt like home away from home. Johan provides vouchers for a wonderful breakfast next door at the Swartberg Hotel on the terrace overlooking the village - served with a fantastic cappuccino. We loved our time and will definitely go back.

Nice stay at Mai's

My husband and I stayed at Mai's for one night. The guest house is perfectly located in the main street, you can easily walk to all restaurants around. Mai is a very kind, exuberant and funny host. Our room was spacious and comfortable with a small electric heater that was welcomed during this cold season. The full and varied breakfast was also delicious.

Mai's Magic shines through.

Mai was a delightful, happy, laughing Irish host. Position was exceptionally good in the centre of the main street, her breakfasts were delicious, our room was large and had everything we needed. It is an attractive old property, not a fancy modern, characterless place but reflects its heritage in a pleasant quirky way.

An oasis of Irish charm and comfort

After a long day travelling we arrived at Mai's Guest House as pre-booked in the delightful town of Prince Albert. Spend more time here! The room we were offered exactly met our needs and was first class. She has 4 rooms, each of them shown to us, and we would happily have used any of them. Her bed linen is beautiful. Her gardens and pool were a delight with many thoughtful touches. There was ample room for anyone to find a quiet corner and relax. A wonderful hostess with many fascinating tales to tell, she ensured that we were comfortable and provided an excellent al-fresco breakfast. Nothing was too much trouble and we are trying to find an excuse to visit again in the future.

“This has got to be one of - if not THE - loveliest places to stay in Prince Albert!”

Adorable B&B run by an even more adorable lady. Mai could not have made me feel more at home. I especially recommend booking the "Pool room" which has its own little terrace overlooking the back garden and pool area (ideal for a nightcap!). Lovely breakfast offering something for everyone's palate. I would definitely stay here again!

“Real Pleasure ”

Thank you for your warm hospitality and friendliness. The breakfast was good and very filling. Have nice options as well. Just love the setting and decor. Just adds to the 'at home' feel. Would definitely recommend.

“Charming B&B”

Mai and her staff are delightful and very welcoming. Nothing is too much trouble and she helped us book excellent restaurants for our evening meals before we arrived.

The B&B is spacious, very comfortable and the pool is a bonus in the heat. The breakfast is outstanding, so don't miss it and Mai is full of life and always chatty.

I would highly recommend Prince Albert as a place to visit and Mai's is the place to stay.

“Mai's Magic”

With her Irish sense of humor and nothing is too much attitude. Mai's is the place to stay. Accommodation spacious, spotless and very comfortable. A dinner booking was arranged with no fuss and we went on our way after a hearty breakfast the following morning. We'll be back for sure.

“Should be number one in Prince Albert!”

After travelling long hours, Mai's guesthouse is so welcoming it removes all of the stress!

This was our second visit and Mai's didn't disappoint. She welcomed us with open arms and a big hug and we chatted way past her bedtime!!

Mai's breakfast, was of course, delicious. I had the scrambled eggs with sour cream and chives a la Gordon Ramsey. It was delicious!

We are planning on returning in November for our third visit!

See you soon, Mai!!

“Delightful Place to Stay"

Mai's place is a wonderful gem made even more enjoyable by Mai and her staff. Her garden is beautiful. The breakfasts are beyond fabulous and if we'd had more time, we would have stayed longer. Overall, the property was lovely, very clean and the staff made the experience even more enjoyable. Everyone went above and beyond to make our stay really wonderful.

"What a truly lovely place..."

Mai must be the best hostess in the guest house world. Nothing is too much trouble. she booked us up for local walks and restaurants, gave us recommendations for places to see the sunset, and onward scenic drives through stunning scenery. The house is beautifully clean, we had the pool house with a lovely outside area to sit in the shade. The staff are so friendly and helpful, we coudn't fault them. We were there for 4 days in November and would have happily stayed on for longer. A truly lovely place to see the Karoo.

Room tip: the pool room is lovely.

Mai and her guesthouse are simply wonderful. A warm welcome, excellent breakfast, friendly and competent staff and the most charming decoration in this beautiful Prince Albert house with a beautiful garden and pool area. The stay nourishes the soul. As always, we'll be back! :-)

"Everything you want and need..."

I had a beautiful, spacious room with a comfortable bed and crisp linen. Four towels were laid out and there were more in the bathroom! The room had a lovely kitchenette corner with a fridge, tea, coffee, glasses of all sizes and cookies in a tin. Filtered water in the fridge and fresh milk. The room was nice and cool. Mai switched on the central cooling during the day and because it was cool outside switched it off at night. The room also had a fan. The bathroom was well stocked, spacious and pretty. I loved the strong shower!
The breakfasts are amazing! Extra care is taken with fresh herbs, gluten free options and a beautifully set table.
The cherry on the cake is Mai's personality. She really wants to make your stay as wonderful as she can. And she succeeds!
I am definitely recommending her to all my friends and I'll be going back to Mai's soonest.

"Great place ... lots of character and fantastic breakfast..."

Spacious and clean room. Bed was very comfortable and there was a nice selection of tea/coffee etc available together with a small fridge in the room. Fantastic shower - really powerful. Mai was a delightful host and the breakfast she provided us was exceptional in terms of quality and presentation. Recommended and would definitely stay there again.

"Home away from home in the Karoo..."

I just love staying at Mai Guest Lodge. The last time I was there was 5 years ago and I must say Mai has made some great improvements, her ingenious Aircon system is fantastic and very eco-friendly. The delightful pool is so welcoming on a hot Karoo day. A comfortable bed with luxurious cotton sheets awaits you after anamazing evening of sunset star gazing and a truly gourmet meal at any of the many superb restaurants ... then just when you think it can't get any better Mai cooks her legendary Irish breakfast... It definitely will not be 5 years before I return.

"A unique experience..."

I'd be willing to wager that Mai's is unique in Prince Albert, if not in the whole of the Karoo. You won't find this kind of hospitality and attention to detail easily - somehow Mai makes you feel right at home within a 5-star ambience. The rooms are breath-taking in their attention to detail and beauty. The breakfasts are to die for. Look out for the mint in the fruit salad. I've been twice and I'll always be back. We had a fantastic holiday, thank you.

"Ideal when we are visiting for work in Prince Albert..."

We found a Bed and Breakfast that is truly a home for us in Prince Albert. We work in Prince Albert quite a lot and cannot imagine staying anywhere else than at Mai's. When you walk through the front gate you get that warm and welcoming feeling. The rooms are big and equipped with everything that you need, including a jar of cookies :) Mai's is within walking distance of all the restaurants, right next to the Swartberg Arms for late night cravings and the owner knows all the best spots!!! Breakfast is our biggest meal of the day with a wide variety to choose from, even Banting. We love staying here and fell in love with Mai's home. Thank you Mai.

"A Prince Albert Gem."

Our family stayed at Mai's on our way down from the Eastern Cape - what a wonderful guest house - the rooms are spacious and clean. it is perfectly positioned on the main road within walking distance of galleries and restaurants. Mai is a super friendly, warm and most hospitable host - the full Karoo breakfast was delicious. We can highly recommend a stop over at Mai's!

Not the first time and far from the Last!

Again, I am cast into a world of slowed bicycle riders, open landscapes, sunsets, gorgeous little cactuses, peace and tranquillity as I find myself day dreaming about Prince Albert and Mai's B&B! The drive there is breath taking as hills seem to shyly dissipate into the horizon, and by the time we arrived at Mai's I was fully unwound from the hustle and bustle of the Cape town City life. Standing in the door way, and welcoming us with that warm Irish smile Mai took our bags, and made sure that we were comfortable and had everything we needed. There is a certain beauty in Prince Albert which cannot be conveyed in words and you see it shining from all those who live there. The beautiful rooms are immaculately kept and I was never left wanting and even though the B&B was full, the privacy of each room, allowed me to think I was the only person within 50 miles... until breakfast. The table was beautifully set out and friendly faces were all busy filling there bellies; after the first course of freshly chopped fruit salad and garden picked figs, a full English breakfast with all the stops pulled out shortly ensued. Absolute bliss! Mai goes over and above what is required from the custodian of a simple bed and breakfast, and transforms your stay into an unforgettable experience! This was not the first time I have stayed at Mai's B&B and it certainly won't be the last! Thank you Aunti Mai!
